Benson was defined as having had the “defining time” of his television career during the 1993 Blizzard, where he and a co-anchor were on the air for most of the weekend. Co-workers were unable to get to the station to relieve them from the snow-covered highways. The event, Benson said, “really placed me on the map.” WPXI employed Benson full time in 1998.

He graduated from the Mississippi State University meteorology training program in 2003 and was awarded a certificate in broadcast meteorology. A reporter from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette criticized a 2006 WPXI petrol gift submitted by Benson because it permitted “commercialism to invade the boundaries of the newscast.” After reporting on the weather at WPXI for nearly all of his years on weekends, the station was stationary.
