Kevin Benson Early Life
He held early radio employment in Erie and DuBois, Pennsylvania, and later became a weather forecaster on Erie’s WJET-TV. He then became a weekend afternoon DJ at WTAE-AM in Pittsburgh. He joined NBC affiliate WPXI in September 1987 as a part-time weatherman. He became a WPXI co-anchor on the first news program on Saturday morning on the Pittsburgh television market in June 1990. The experiment has been a success and Sunday afternoons have been extended to include the format.
Benson followed a second career in beer sales while working part-time at WPXI. He worked for the Erie headquarters of Stroh Brewery Company during the early 1980s; from 1984 to 1987 he was a brand director for Iron City Beer; and from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, he helped rescue a struggling Anheuser-Busch wholesale dealer in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.
Benson was defined as having had the “defining time” of his television career during the 1993 Blizzard, where he and a co-anchor were on the air for most of the weekend. Co-workers were unable to get to the station to relieve them from the snow-covered highways. The event, Benson said, “really placed me on the map.” WPXI employed Benson full time in 1998.
He graduated from the Mississippi State University meteorology training program in 2003 and was awarded a certificate in broadcast meteorology. A reporter from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette criticized a 2006 WPXI petrol gift submitted by Benson because it permitted “commercialism to invade the boundaries of the newscast.” After reporting on the weather at WPXI for nearly all of his years on weekends, the station was stationary.
